Whilst there does tend to be a stigma attached to users of internet dating sites, a recent 2010 infographic completed by Online Schools reveals that online dating industry is starting to dominate the adult online entertainment industry the world over, with online dating now worth an estimated £670 million per year.



This is expected to continue to grow to £821 million by 2013; dwarfing the adult entertainment industry which is now estimated to be worth between £470 and £630 million. In fact, the adult entertainment industry has begun to blame the boom of online dating for its recent £74 million downturn in the market.

Other findings in the study included interesting statistics regarding which particular aspects of their personality or descriptions of their basic information were falsified by users on their dating profiles.



Men generally exaggerated their height and income, and had the tendency to lie to make themselves appear younger. Women also lied about their age, but more prominently described their physical build and weight to appear lighter and slimmer than they actually were. It is thought that people on dating sites are actually two inches shorter than they say they are and make 20% less money than they claim to, and their profile picture is also an older or more attractive alternative representation of what they actually look like at the time.



Such findings suggest that the negative stigma associated with online daters is starting to let up, but that people are still taking advantage of the fact that other users cannot physically see them, as they have been since the online dating industry began to flourish in 2004.
