There is so much to think about when it comes to deciding to get a puppy or kitten. Everything from where you should get your new pet from to where it should sleep to pet-proofing the house to what it should eat. It makes sense to spend a little time considering all of these questions before you bring the new addition to the family home.

Getting your new pet settled in as quickly as possible is vital. Remember that this sweet, squirmy little creature has just left behind the comfort and security of its mother and its brothers and sisters. Hopefully your pet has come from a registered breeder who will have made sure it was ready to leave home, that it was inoculated with all the required jabs and that it was not too young to be separated from its mother.

Having a cosy bed in a warm place is a good start. Some people recommend a hot water bottled under some blankets and a ticking clock to give the puppy or kitten the feeling of being with its mother again. Others say that whatever you hear in the night, no matter how plaintive the mewing or whining is, that you should ignore it and not visit the puppy or kitten. Conversely, there are those who believe that dogs at least should always sleep in the bedroom or have access to the bedroom, in order to check on their ‘pack’ (that means you) as this is how they would behave in the wild.

As with everything in life, there is more than one way to bring up a dog or a cat. Taking shortcuts with dog nutrition or cat nutrition is ill-advised though. The best advice comes from the Blue Cross, the British animal charity, who say that your puppy or kitten should be kept on the same food that they were fed previous to coming to your home, for a while at least, to ensure some stability.

They also advise using proper dog or cat food for all stages of the pet’s life and development, as ‘homemade’ pet food cannot beat speciality products for optimum dog nutrition and cat nutrition.
